It's hard to shake a traumatic past, but Evelyn (Chelsea Clark, GINNY AND GEORGIA) is trying to rebuild her life. Under the care of her psychiatrist Dr. Flora (Rebecca Jenkins, SUPERNATURAL), and the watchful eye of the town's Chief Gordon (Andrew Gillies, THE VIRGIN SUICIDES), Evelyn is moved from a juvenile detention centre to the crime-free town of Wilfrid, where she is to live and work under probation. When an anonymous birthday gift—a book—is left at her door, Evelyn's life changes forever. It tells of "The Protector," a god called to bring peace to a given area, and she becomes fascinated by the legend. It pushes her gig as a server at the local deli, her past, and her unsuccessful dates to the background, and brings her closer to her co-worker Eloah (Munro Chambers, TURBO KID). Uncovering intriguing facts about the town, Evelyn becomes obsessed with the information she learns, losing her grip on sanity and inching closer to a dangerous fate.

Written and directed by Lenin M. Sivam (1999, A GUN & A RING, ROOHBA), THE PROTECTOR combines a Canadian sensibility with South Asian beliefs, magical realism, and a modern-day heroine who refuses to be pushed around by bureaucracy or those who try to control her. Sivam enlists veterans Jenkins and Gillies to ground the film, fan favourite Chambers as a dependable foil, and Clark makes for an engaging protagonist fueled by her anger, trauma and a search for the truth. – Carolyn Mauricette
